Welcome to Bay Area Indian Nurses Association (BAINA)

The purpose of this association is to serve as an empowering body and resource for all registered nurses, advance practice nurses, allied healthcare professionals and nursing students so that we may optimize our contribution to the health and well-being of individuals, families, and the communities we serve. California has the largest Indian American population in the entire country and our current nursing workforce constitutes only 9.6% of Asian Indian Nurses.

BAINA’s aim is to be the voice for Indian nurses and minorities by ensuring equal access to professional development, mentorship, and succession planning. Additionally, collaborate with community partners to improve the overall health of our community by providing education, and screenings at community events and health fairs.

President's Message

From the Desk of the President

Fatima Arastu
DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, CNEn, Caritas Coach

As the first founding president of BAINA, I am proud to lead an organization with a vision to position minority nurses to lead and advance health for all.

My vision for 2025-2026 emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive and empowering space for Indian nurses in the Bay Area. By increasing our visibility within the nursing community, strengthening partnerships with affinity and professional organizations, and promoting educational opportunities, we aim to elevate the contributions of minority nurses and advocate for their needs.

Together, we will unite to reduce disparities, advance health equity, and foster a thriving community where Indian nurses can excel and lead in transforming care delivery. This initiative is not just about representation; it’s about creating a lasting impact on healthcare in our communities.

I would also like to express our gratitude for our affiliation with the National Association of Indian Nurses of America (NAINA). NAINA fosters a sense of community by bringing together nurses of Indian origin and heritage nationwide. Our active engagement and collaboration will expand community outreach efforts both locally and nationally.

Furthermore, our partnership with the American Nurses Association (ANA) allows us to advocate for policies that promote a healthy work environment, support climate change initiatives, prioritize well-being, and improve patient outcomes.

I am grateful to have a dedicated team who has joined me in this journey. Together, we are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of our members and the communities we serve.

Thank you for entrusting me with this responsibility. I look forward to working with each of you.

Sincerely,
Dr. Fatima Arastu

Vaisakhi is a joyful and inspiring festival in Sikhism that commemorates the founding of the Khalsa by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, in 1699—an event that shaped a vibrant Sikh identity. The festival highlights enduring values such as equality, justice, and selfless service. In a world often divided, Vaisakhi’s message of unity, courage, and compassion serves as an uplifting call toward a more just and harmonious society.

🌟 Cultural Corner: Celebrating Unity & Seva at our First Vaisakhi Event
We are buzzing with pride following the inaugural Vaisakhi celebration at Stanford Health Care! What began as a vision for inclusion transformed into a vibrant reality, filling our halls with the spirit of courage, equality, and community.

Honoring Our Pathfinders
A massive shout-out to Navjot Kaur for her incredible leadership in bringing this event to life. Alongside the dedicated efforts of Deepa Mani and Sandip Sall, Navjot steered this initiative with a passion for visibility and cultural understanding. Collaboration with the Diversity Committee, Deepa Mani, Sandip Sall BAINA- Rekha Khubchandani, Fatima Arastu  and AAHS, proves that when we create space for our diverse stories, we strengthen the fabric of our entire organization.

Why Vaisakhi Matters in Healthcare
Vaisakhi is more than a seasonal festival; it is a reminder of the values that define great caregiving:

Seva (Selfless Service): Putting the needs of others before oneself.

Equality: Recognizing the inherent dignity in every patient and colleague.

Community: Building a “stronger together” mindset.

By embracing these traditions, we don’t just learn about one another—we become a more empathetic, connected, and effective team of caregivers.

Visibility is powerful. Advocacy is essential. Belonging is non-negotiable.
